If you searched for tankless water heater pricing and landed here, it’s worth stopping for a second. A heat pump water heater is not a tankless unit and it doesn’t run on gas. It’s a tank-style water heater with a small heat pump bolted to the top that pulls warmth out of the surrounding air and moves it into the water, the same way the heat pump on your roofline moves warmth in and out of your house. For an all-electric home, or a homeowner in San Diego thinking about dropping a gas connection entirely, it’s the closest thing to a like-for-like swap.

How it actually heats water

A standard electric resistance water heater turns electricity directly into heat, which is simple but not efficient. A heat pump water heater instead uses a small compressor and refrigerant loop to extract heat from the air in the room it sits in and concentrate that heat into the tank. Because it’s moving heat rather than generating it, a heat pump water heater typically uses two to three times less electricity than a standard electric tank to heat the same amount of water. Most residential units on the market carry a Uniform Energy Factor in the 3.5-4.0 range, which is the water heater equivalent of a heat pump’s HSPF2 rating.

The tradeoff is placement. These units pull heat out of the air around them, which cools and dehumidifies that space. A garage works well. A small, poorly ventilated interior closet does not, and most manufacturers specify a minimum room volume, often 700-1,000 cubic feet, unless the unit is ducted to pull air from elsewhere.

A whole-house water softener isn’t required to own one of these units, but it does reduce the maintenance burden meaningfully if you already have one installed.
