Cost and quotes

How much does heat pump installation cost in San Diego?

A single-zone ductless mini-split runs $3,500-$7,000 installed. A multi-zone system runs $7,000-$18,000. A central heat pump replacing an existing split system runs $8,000-$18,000. The on-site estimate confirms the written price.

Is the estimate really free?

Yes. A crew visits your property, reviews your space and electrical capacity, and hands you a written quote with no obligation and no trip fee for your zip.

Are California rebates available for heat pump installation?

Yes. The TECH Clean California program offers rebates up to $3,000 for qualifying heat pump installs through SDG&E and other utilities. Federal tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act also apply to qualifying equipment. Your crew confirms rebate eligibility at the on-site estimate.

System types and selection

What is the difference between a mini-split and a central heat pump?

A mini-split is ductless and conditions one room or zone per indoor unit. A central heat pump uses existing ductwork to heat and cool the whole home from one outdoor unit. Mini-splits are ideal for homes without ducts, room additions, and targeted comfort. Central heat pumps work best when existing ductwork is in good condition.

What SEER rating should I look for in San Diego?

California requires a minimum of 15 SEER2 for new installations. A 16-18 SEER2 unit offers meaningful utility savings on SDG&E rates and typically qualifies for rebates. Units above 20 SEER2 deliver additional savings on larger homes or heavy-use applications. Your crew recommends the right efficiency tier for your utility costs and budget.

Do I need a panel upgrade for a heat pump?

Often yes for older homes. A typical heat pump requires a 240-volt, 30-50 amp dedicated circuit. Homes with 100-amp panels may need an upgrade to 200 amps to support the new load, especially if an electric vehicle charger or other high-draw appliances are planned. The crew checks electrical capacity at the on-site visit.

Permits and process

Do I need a permit for heat pump installation in San Diego?

Yes. New installations and replacements require a mechanical permit. Electrical work for new circuits requires a separate electrical permit. Your crew handles all permits when the scope calls for them.

How long does heat pump installation take?

A single-zone mini-split installs in one day. A multi-zone system takes two to three days. A central heat pump replacement with ductwork work takes two to four days. Your crew sets the timeline at the on-site estimate.

Will a heat pump save money on my utility bills in San Diego?

In most cases yes. Heat pumps move heat instead of generating it, which is three to four times more efficient than electric resistance heating. In San Diego's mild climate the cooling season savings are real too. SDG&E customers with time-of-use rates who pair a heat pump with a smart thermostat typically see meaningful monthly savings.

About the service

Are you the company doing the work?

No. Heat Pro SD is a referral service, insured but not licensed, cslb.ca.gov. We match you with insured local C-20 HVAC crews and help you get a clear written quote. The crew you hire does the work.

Are the crews insured?

The crews we match carry general liability and workers comp, and we confirm coverage before work starts. You can verify any California HVAC contractor license (C-20) at cslb.ca.gov.

What does the service cost me?

Getting matched and getting the on-site estimate and written quote costs you nothing. You only pay the crew you choose for the actual heat pump work.
