Thermostat and Controls

Heat pump thermostat and controls installation across San Diego County

A heat pump is only as efficient as the thermostat controlling it. A smart thermostat with proper heat pump wiring, including the O/B reversing valve wire and auxiliary heat staging, prevents the system from running the wrong mode and running up your SDG&E bill. We connect San Diego County homeowners with insured C-20 HVAC crews that verify the wiring, install the right thermostat for the system, and test every mode before they leave.

What's included in this service?

  • Existing thermostat wiring verification to confirm compatibility with a heat pump smart thermostat
  • Smart thermostat installation with correct O/B reversing valve, auxiliary heat, and fan wiring
  • Wi-Fi setup, app pairing, and schedule programming for the homeowner's typical occupancy pattern
  • SDG&E demand-response enrollment setup, which can earn bill credits during peak demand events
  • Testing of all modes: heating, cooling, emergency heat, and fan-only
  • Mini-split wireless control setup and multi-head app integration where applicable

When do you need this service?

  • Your heat pump runs in heating mode during a cooling call or vice versa after a thermostat swap
  • Your current thermostat does not support O/B reversing valve wiring or auxiliary heat staging
  • You want remote access and scheduling to pre-cool or pre-heat before arriving home
  • You want to enroll in SDG&E demand-response programs that require a compatible thermostat
  • Your mini-split came with only a wall remote and you want app control and scheduling

What do homeowners ask about Thermostat and Controls?

Can any smart thermostat work with a heat pump?

No. A heat pump requires a thermostat with an O/B reversing valve terminal and heat pump mode logic. Standard AC thermostats are not wired for this and will cause the system to run in the wrong mode. Nest, Ecobee, and Honeywell T6 Pro all have dedicated heat pump modes when configured correctly.

What is SDG&E demand-response and how does it save money?

SDG&E's demand-response programs pay customers bill credits in exchange for allowing small, automated temperature adjustments during peak grid demand periods. A compatible smart thermostat enrolled in the program adjusts setpoints by 2-4 degrees during these events. You can override the adjustment, but most homeowners do not notice it.

My new thermostat makes my heat pump run heat when I want cooling. What is wrong?

The O/B wire is likely set to the wrong polarity. Some heat pumps use O (cooling) and some use B (heating) for the reversing valve signal. The thermostat must be configured to match your equipment. The crew verifies this at installation.
